the Jane

Short name for the Mary Jane Ski Resort in Winter Park, Colorado. Since its construction in the 1970's, the Mary JaneSki Area has been referred to as simply The Jane. Known for it's blistering bump runs and killer tree skiing, the Jane is a popular day ski resort for skiers and snowboarders living on the Front Range of Colorado. Only one and a half hours of driving time from Denver, Colorado.

Let's drive up to ski The Jane today and see if our knees explode after some laps on the bump trails. If the bumps kick our ass, we'll go ride the trees and hit some fresh pow.

blower skiing

Outstanding, epic, skiing and or snowboarding conditions, both during and after a major snow event. Blower skiing and riding is specific to powder snow conditions, but the term is sometimes used in a general sense to describe an amazing ski or snowboarding experience.

The blower skiing conditions from that last storm cycle makes me wanna give up the day job!

boot-out

In Alpine Skiing a boot-out occurs when the skier lays his or her skis so far over on their edges that the ski boot makes contact with the snow causing the ski edges to lose their edge grip. Boot-out mostly occurs during a carved ski turn and impacts Alpine skiers far more often than snowboarders.

I had a boot-out on that steep section and my skis shot out from under me.

Depth Hoar

Depth Hoar is a type of snow crystal also known as TG snow. Depth Hoar forms a layer in the snowpack that acts like ball bearings on the floor of a old folks home. Chances are, some poor bastard is gonna get taken down. Depth Hoar is the weak layer and fails under both natural and manmade triggers such as skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers and explosives. Ski Patrollers have been overheard referring to TG snow as depth whore; nasty, sloppy, unreliable long-term and above all, costly.

The Depth Hoar that formed early this ski season is gonna come back and bite us in the ass if we don't blast the shit outta it. This season's Depth Hoar created some of the worst avalanche conditions we've seen in a long time.

Edge Bevel

Edge Bevel describes the degree of angle that a ski tech puts on a ski or snowboardedge. The level of edge hold depends on the edge bevel of both the side edge and the base edge of the ski or snowboard. The average edge bevel equals one degree on the side edge and one degree on the base edge providing for a overall edge bevel of 88 degrees. Snowboard and Ski Racers, Edge Heads and expert riders prefer greater degrees of Edge Bevel to provide sharper ski and snowboard edges for greater edge hold.

Hey, I prefer to point em, but when I need it, I like a 3 Degree side Edge Bevel for kick-ass edge hold on those bullet-proof ski runs.
