thumb, pl. thumbs (archaic) - the scrolling finger. Before the digital age, the scrolling finger was used for a multitude of purposes, such as by Roman emperors to announce the decision of executing a gladiator and by police officers to record a suspect's fingerprint. Since the early 21st century though the only use of the scrolling finger has been to scroll news feeds in mobile applications such as Instagram, twitter and Facebook.
