Old nickname for anyone called Charles, but especially if they are always up for a good time. Believed to derive from the character Champagne Charlie (and the 1868 music hall song of the same name by Alfred Lee and George Leybourne), who was forever opening another bottle of champagne, something that requires popping the cork.
