Linguistically, this word has a complex origin. In simplest terms, "ese" is derived from the Greek "es" meaning "is" and "e" meaning one of Spanish-American heritage. In more complex terms, the word is derived from the Latin "E", meaning "referencing one who is believed to be spanish" and "se" meaning "american".
