prep

Typically, this word has become a derogatory name for a guy or a girl who takes pride in the way they approach, and appear, in life. Common misconceptions about "preps" are that we are a bunch of cocky, New England elitist types who have more money than God, himself, and an inherent desire to flaunt it in the form of clothing, cars, housing, education and social standing. First off: You don't have to be from the north to be a prep. Let me make this very clear. What prep initially implies is that you went to preparatory school, hence the word "prep" (I'll discuss later how it's a cultural identity). There are plenty of good southern preparatory schools, which include Woodberry Forest, Virginia Episcopal School...you get the idea. There are good preparatory schools in every corner of this country, but it's the New England boarding schools that have assisted in establishing this stereotyped location. Let's get on with true prep culture: A prep's wardrobe consists of some expensive clothing, but they've had it for the better part of a decade--excluding the two Vineyard Vines polos they got for their birthday and the 50% off sale at Brooks Brothers--indicating the true preppy trait of valuing "classic" over "trendy". We don't buy into the Lacoste trend of now, but we will gladly wear "handed down from dad" Lacoste polo shirt when it still maintained an association with Izod, which was well before it became the token icon of a sold out, soulless and materialistic world. And as far as the true prep's garage is concerned, you're more likely to find a boxy Volvo station wagon or sedan (ski rack clutching to the roof for dear life) than you are the Ferrari or Hummer that everybody seems to associate with a prep. You find cars like those in the garages of those obnoxious yuppies who liken themselves to human beings because of the sole reason that they have a body with blood (no matter how drug-laced) flowing through it. Another typical misconception about preps is that we live in gigantic mansions on the 8th fairway of some country club to prove a point. Hell no. People who buy a big house with the sole intention of demonstrating that they have a lot of money are NOT preps. They are assholes or yuppies. The only time a prep will ever move into a big house (and even then, it will never be one that is likened to a McMansion)is if A) they have a large family or B) it was passed down for generations (refer to the "classic" versus "trendy" juxtaposition, because trust me, it applies right here). When it comes to housing, for a true prep, less is definitely more. A true prep will rent a studio apartment somewhere on the Upper East Side in lieu of purchasing a behemoth piece of archtectural vomit on the links, even though both probably wind up costing the same. This brings me to education. Preps spend money on an education for the sole reason of having the proper tools to become successfully established with relative ease upon graduation. It's not for bragging rights, because anybody who brags about going to Harvard because it's "Haaaarvard" and not "the groundwork for their future success" usually winds up the victim of some form of brutal sodomy. A prep's tendency with regard to education is to go to a top College or University (generally on the east coast, but there's always Stanford and UCLA should a prep choose to make a respectable deviation from the norm). Private institutions frequented by preps include, but are certainly not limited to: Middlebury, Bowdoin, Duke, Tufts, Davidson, Lehigh, LaFayette, Colby, Bates, and every single Ivy League institution ever established. If for high school, a prep found Choate, Kent or Andover to be too small, they might choose to attend any of the following public universities: UVA, UNC, Michigan, UCLA, etc. Finally, to put an end to an abhorrent misconception that everybody seems to maintain: NO, true preps do not buy their social status. Maybe we'll hang out at a ritzy bar if a friend is getting married, but normally, we avoid those scenes until we're at least 45 years old and drink scotch. The young people who frequent those places are just plain trying too hard. A true prep knows where to find a classy joint that won't break the bank or the heart. An amazing night on the town for a prep consists of dinner at J.G. Melon (11$) followed by an evening of wasting away on well-bourbon at T.J.'s (25$), which is an incredibly fun and inexpensive joint, considering it's in Manhattan. If that were my night, which it has been before, I would have just spent less in six hours than the pretentious bastard across the street did in the thirty seconds that it took him to order the Escargot. A true prep is a classy individual. We know where to go, who to know and we seriously believe in class, and the true ones of us refuse to buy into pop culture. We do the right things, whether it's holding the door for a lady, mixing our Gin and Tonic with the right proportions, or double-spacing after every period when we write our essays. Truly, "prep" is not a trend, it is a classic way of life.

Brian: That upstart young man with O'Melveny and Myers attended Andover and went on to earn dual Bachelor's Degrees from Middlebury College and a law degree from the University of Virginia. Exemplary of a truly classy individual. John: Ah yes, a true prep. Brian: And look at that, he just gave his jacket to that incredibly tall, gorgeous blonde woman. Why can't my daughter find someone like that?

For many, it's the conformist 13 year old who loves pink and has had eight cell phones already with a low brain-cell count. To truly put it, a prep is a person who is attending or has attended a prepratory high school (which is usually Catholic or in some other form religious), and has moved on or plans to move on to an Ivy League or other prestigious college; in recent times, preps have favored more sporty colleges in the Midwest than prestigious ones. Their family lineage is generally in establishing business(es), banking, has had a hand in city-founding, or is a political official. Sports are extremely important to most preps, and often are accepted to colleges on athletic scholarships. Tennis, lacrosse, field hockey, golf, swimming, and soccer are popular sporting choices for most prep students. Schooling is very important, seeing as a general minimum of $10,000 per year is put into a prep school for one student. As for college, it is extremely rare to find a prep student planning to go to a community college. On a last note, preps are notorious for wearing, on a normal day, sweatpants and t-shirts from school and eating more than most public school students and still maintaining their ideal body-type (perhaps the food is burned off in sports and excercise?). On weekends, events, and nights-out, prep girls are expert at dolling up in high fashion without looking unnatural, and the guys also know how to clean up if needed to be, also. It is a common misconception that preps are self-centered and are oblivious to the world around them. In reality, a prep does not care about how other stereotypes view them, because it does not interfere with their social and educational lives. Much of a student's money is donated to fundraisers while in school to organizations working for relief in many poor South African, South American, and Asian countries. Preps don't pay any mind to people who do not understand their classy lifestyle.

At the Mall: 13-year old brat: MOM. I need more like, jean skirts. Now. Don't make me call daddy! Misled Person: Ew look at that prep. Actual prep 1(obviously after a soccer practice): *Snorts* Actual prep 2: Tell me about it.

prep

An intelligent, well-rounded person who wears classic brands like Polo, Lacoste, Lilly, Vineyard Vines, etc. They have pastimes such as tennis, sailing, skiing, lacrosse, rugby, horseback riding, and more. A true preppy visits the East Coast annually and has a house on Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. They meet other preppies at yacht clubs and country clubs. Preppies are seen almost anywhere, but generally cling to warmer climates. A real preppy is not rude, snobby or unwelcoming at all, they are just stereotyped because of their affluence, rather a true prep is generous and caring, and above all: the funnest type to meet. Preppies travel year-round, prefferably to Europe. England is a favourite, a home to the majority of preps in the world. A prep always has a dog as a faithful companion, especially: Spaniels, English Setters, Golden Retrievers, Irish Setters, Nova Scotias, and others from the sporting group. The preppy house is elagantly decorated in a traditional manner. A preppy drives mainly a 2008 Jaguar for its classic looks. A preppy's wardrobe contains a wide assortment of polos, rugbys, embroidered pants and shorts, twill coats, and knit argyle sweaters. A prep's clothes a worn for decades, or until they fall apart. They love color, especially pink and green. Preppies are great people, and that is why I am one.

"I am going sailing today, would you care to join? "Fancy that! I am in quite the mood for some sailing." "Come to the dock half past two and we can embark on our trip. Bring along Molly, too." "Great. I will see you then. A great preppy way to spend a Sunday."

Originally used to imply those who are attending prepatory schools, it is now interpreted by the modern generation to denote a certain denomination of the high school population which are resricted to the following fashions. - Hollister - Abercrombie and Fitch - Lulu Lemon - Uggs - Leggings Most preps belong to caucasian suburban families often higher in their social classes. They are often intensely concerned about their social status and do all in their power as to keep with the latest fashions, thus producing the inability to develop any diverse personality. They are often found mingling amoung their ilk at schools and enjoy the local country clubs and ridiculing those whom they deem inferior (those with a personality, those of poorer families and virtually any who do not conform to their social ideals. Preps oppose emos and ghettos although seem to have some strange mutual understanding for the drug-abusing cliques at high school. It is assumed their lack of hostility is due to the drug clique's supplying the preps' drug habits.

Jimmy was appalled at how increasingly fast the girls at his school began jumping on the uggs fashion band wagon during the winter months, the prep fashion had taken it's grip. Jimmy: "You can't find any individual girl at school, they all look alike!" Bobby: "Too many Lulu Lemons headbands"

let's take this from someone who's lived in new england all her life. a prep is usually a well-bred person who goes to prep school, boarding school, or private school, but not always. he/she can go to public school, too. they are pretty well-mannered and care alot about their academics. at least most of us do. some of us do come from a wealthy family. we're all usually involved in some sort of hobby such as field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, or my personal favorite, swimming, to be concerned about labeling anyone else. fashion is really important to us, or at least to me. we like looking nice, but we have no intention of flaunting or shoving price tags under everyone else's noses. my personal favorite places to shop are ralph lauren, lacoste, j.crew, sometimes lilly pulitzer and juicy couture. we like to wear juicy but we don't overdo it, vera bradleys are nice, and we love wearing our north face jackets in the winter, and occasionally we'll wear some burberry. but not all preps dress that way. some preps can dress in abercrombie & fitch, american eagle, and hollister co. and that doesn't make them any less than equal to those who do splurge a little. on vacations, new england "preps" do tend to spend weekends at the hamptons, in cape cod, or in martha's vineyard, but over here, that's just pure culture. but you can ignore all that if oyu want because being a prep isn't about the school you go to, where you went this summer, or what you wear. it's all about the way you act and the definition of being well-mannered.

example of a prep: every prep is pretty much different. they don't all have the same personality, so therefore i pretty much say "screw the example" =
