clip

A device, generally a strip of metal or plastic, used to hold loose cartridges together to facilitate faster loading of a rifle or magazine. A clip has no spring or follower, therefore a magazine is NOT a clip.

The M1 Garand is fed by an 8 round en bloc clip.

clip

A device that holds together or "clips" ammunition / cartridges in a bundle or inline. Used for quick insertion of cartidges into a magazine of a firearm.

Many people confuse clip and magazine. A clip is not a magazine! Extremely few firearms have a clip inserted into it to feed the weapon.

Clipping

Clipping is a penalty in American football in which a blocker will hit a non-ball carrying opponent from behind and below the waist. Not to be confused with block in the back, which is essentially the same thing but the contact occurs at or above the waist.

Clipping is a foul that usually results in a 15 yard penalty.

clip

term describing a conditon that occurs in amplifiers and mixing equipment were a signal is put through the equipment that is beyond what that equipment can handle. This results in a chopping off or "clipping" of the signal done to a manageable level, which off causes the loss of some part of the signal. Keeping a signal at a level of clipping for more than a few minutes will kick a amplifier into "protect" mode until it cools off.

To hit or graze an object while in motion, usually at high speed.

That fighter jet flew so low it clipped the tree line with one of its wings. We were taking heavy fire from down the street and a bullet clipped me in the shoulder. Jimmy clipped the curb while he was parking his car.
