lamers usually link not to the website but only to the content/download. therefore a content provider will have the impact of traffic but not the advantage of receiving page views/ad clicks. This was especially frowned up in the 90s when traffic was expensive and led to download pre-pages and up to the kind of file share storage providers you still see to day.
