Drop a dime

To inform on someone who committed an unacceptable or illegal act. Back in the day, phones in booths cost ten cents for a call. A caller would drop a dime into the coin slot to make a phone call to the police.

Watch out for that guy, or he’ll drop a dime on you. I heard he narked onJohn for holdin’ an eigth.

To snitch on someone. Often, to save their own ass. Comes from the old cost for a payphone call, ten cents.

"John got popped, so he dropped a dime on his supplier and they let him go."
