red shirt

A character in a science fiction or adventure story whose sole dramatic purpose is to get killed by the story's villain and/or intinerant monster. Taken from the propensity of security officers on the original Star Trek series (who typically wore red uniform tops) to be killed in the epsiodes' pre-opening-credits teasers.

Methinks Lt. Jones is doomed to be just another red shirt.

note to self

Expression used as an aside in conversation as a self-reminder for future reference. The phrase is a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgement of our era of Daytimers, Palm Pilots and other personal organizers. It is said as if the speaker was recording his thoughts on tape or some other medium.

Note to self: don't mention ex-girlfriends on next date. So ... interested in dessert?
