Throwing the catfish back

When you invent a whole alter ego to pretend to become romantically involved with so that an an ex or a stalker or anyone who is being generally pushy and invasive in your life will waste time investigating a non-existent person and leave you alone for a while.

I'm throwing the catfish back and inventing a fake new love interest to get my ex off my back and spin his wheels for once for a while.

Throw It Back

The usual intent for catching a fish that you plan on releasing, noting that while terminology itself may be the reason you seem to care enough about the fish enough to release it by the surface credit you gain from letting it go, that will be enough to keep people happy and pacified in not knowing with how much force that you end up always using to throw the fish back which is always to its detriment.

Gordilia: "What are you going to do with that fish; catch & release it?" Cornelius: "No. I'm going to throw it back!"
