In video games backtracking is when you have to move through 'finished' areas which you already went through to be able to progress.
All this backtracking sucks! Couldn't the level designers place the red door closer to the red key?
When you go in a direction, then you go the opposite direction to your last position.
Example:

You go north, then south

(Original position) (Back to original position)
or
You go from your dining room to your kitchen, then back to your dining room
