Pre-friend

The relationship between two individuals past acquaintanceship, but not quite at the level of friendship yet.

It can be used to describe a coworker or classmate with whom you wouldn't really spend a whole day alone with; but are familiar enough to wave at in a mall.

Brandon and John see each other every day, but they hardly spend time together one-on-one! Nato calls them "pre-friends".

pre-friend

To creep on a prospect's social networking profile before meeting them in order to gain a social advantage when actually meeting and conversing with said prospect.

Henry - "I like this girl but I know nothing about her, and I'm going to a party tonight where she'll be."
Clyde - "You should totally pre-friend her so you have something to talk about!"
