To avoid obligations by hiding. To leave without permission. To leave work early. To avoid undesirable work. Some one who is lazy often refered to as a shade or shader.

Shaded

Drinking copious amounts of alcohol out of a broken lamp shade. Each participating degenerate takes turns chugging beer/liquor/mix out of said lamp shade. Probably in a Guelph, Ontario basement.

'the shades' is what you call police/guards in north cork, Ireland. Maybe people use it elsewhere in Ireland too but I do not know.
