outskirt

Edge of a geographic area. The part or region remote from a central district, as of a city or town. As a noun, plural form is much more commonly used.

Many people commute into the business district from the outskirts of town.

The areas around a city with chain restaurants or malls. Some people call the outskirts edge cities, satellite cities, suburbs, it's all a reference to similar areas.
